intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation) in Albany, NY

Overview

We are happy to offer intravenous (IV) sedation to help patients enjoy relaxed, positive dental experiences. IV sedation may be for children and adults who are anxious or fearful when undergoing dental procedures. This sedation service commonly performed at Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons uses anti-anxiety medication that is administered directly into your vein and can help you to stay calm and relaxed throughout your dental treatments. Although you remain conscious and awake throughout the procedure, the relaxation and temporary memory loss may make you feel as if you have been asleep. Experienced oral surgeons Drs. Stephen DeMarco, Diego Miron, Timothy Adams, and Luis Delgado have advanced training and certification in IV sedation and dental anesthesia and can adjust the level of medication based upon your needs to maintain your safety. To learn more about IV sedation for your oral surgery procedures, please contact our Albany, NY surgical center and talk with a member of our staff today.

Best Candidates

IV sedation may be ideal for a wide range of patients. The best candidates for intravenous sedation may be patients who have moderate to severe anxiety when receiving dental care, those who need multiple dental procedures, and individuals who have trouble getting numb. This sedation dentistry solution may also be ideal for patients who require complex care or have lengthy treatment needs. Prior to undergoing therapy, one of our oral surgeons will speak with you regarding IV sedation and the various options our practice offers so that you can get the care you need without distress or fear.

What To Expect

On the day of your procedure, a small needle will be inserted inside a vein in your arm and the medication will be administered throughout your treatment. You will begin to feel the effects within a few seconds and will seem to "fall asleep." While our skilled surgeon is performing your treatment, our surgical team will monitor your vitals and track your level of IV medication. After the procedure is complete, the IV will be removed and you will begin to feel more alert a short time later.

This is a wonderful and caring doctor. I was quite worried about having an upper molar removed. I hadn't had a tooth removed since i was a child many years ago and the initial oral surgeon that my dentist sent me to did not give me a confident feeling. I was so happy to find Dr. DeMarco. He put me at ease at my initial consultation. He's very kind and thorough and answers all your questions. He also was able to schedule this procedure a few weeks from the initial consultation. On the procedure day, I was impressed to see all the assistants he had in the room, asking pertinent questions and each one of them having a specific job. The nurse who administered the IV sedation was very nice. I felt well taken care of. The procedure was over so quickly and I felt perfectly fine afterwards. The staff were available to talk to after the procedure when I had some questions..they get right back to you. I would highly recommend Dr. Marco.

Recovery

You will need an adult escort to drive you to and from your dental appointment and take you home. It is also recommended that you avoid driving for at least 24 hours following IV sedation. Our team will provide your escort with follow-up instructions on how to care for your mouth as you heal and recover and what to expect as the sedation wanes. Since you will likely feel drowsy for the rest of the day, we advise that you rest and stay hydrated. In some cases, patients may become nauseous or undergo temporary memory loss. However, these side effects will typically diminish within 24 hours. If you notice any abnormalities or if your symptoms persist, please contact our facility right away.
