IV Sedation Overview
We are happy to offer intravenous (IV) sedation to help patients enjoy relaxed, positive dental experiences. IV sedation may be for children and adults who are anxious or fearful when undergoing dental procedures. This sedation service commonly performed at Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons uses anti-anxiety medication that is administered directly into your vein and can help you to stay calm and relaxed throughout your dental treatments. Although you remain conscious and awake throughout the procedure, the relaxation and temporary memory loss may make you feel as if you have been asleep. Experienced oral surgeons Drs. Stephen DeMarco, Diego Miron, Timothy Adams, and Luis Delgado have advanced training and certification in IV sedation and dental anesthesia and can adjust the level of medication based upon your needs to maintain your safety. To learn more about IV sedation for your oral surgery procedures, please contact our Albany, NY surgical center and talk with a member of our staff today.
"Dr. DeMarco was recommended by my General Dentist to provide 2 dental implants. Dr. DeMarco explained in detail what he would be doing, each of the steps, and the approximate time frames for each step. He is an excellent communicator and a caring and compassionate professional. All of the office staff, from receptionists to dental assistants and technicians, are great to work with. The entire office atmosphere is very comforting. I highly recommend Dr. DeMarco and his practice."- J.H. / Healthgrades / Jun 11, 2020

"All went as explained in my first appointment with Dr. DeMarco. No issues with pain afterward either or any discomfort. He's a real professional and my results show it, a couple of implant posts later. My wife had the same results 5 years ago."- G.O. / Healthgrades / Oct 29, 2019

Best Candidates for IV Sedation
IV sedation may be ideal for a wide range of patients. The best candidates for intravenous sedation may be patients who have moderate to severe anxiety when receiving dental care, those who need multiple dental procedures, and individuals who have trouble getting numb. This sedation dentistry solution may also be ideal for patients who require complex care or have lengthy treatment needs. Prior to undergoing therapy, one of our oral surgeons will speak with you regarding IV sedation and the various options our practice offers so that you can get the care you need without distress or fear.
What To Expect with IV Sedation
On the day of your procedure, a small needle will be inserted inside a vein in your arm and the medication will be administered throughout your treatment. You will begin to feel the effects within a few seconds and will seem to "fall asleep." While our skilled surgeon is performing your treatment, our surgical team will monitor your vitals and track your level of IV medication. After the procedure is complete, the IV will be removed and you will begin to feel more alert a short time later.
IV Sedation Recovery
You will need an adult escort to drive you to and from your dental appointment and take you home. It is also recommended that you avoid driving for at least 24 hours following IV sedation. Our team will provide your escort with follow-up instructions on how to care for your mouth as you heal and recover and what to expect as the sedation wanes. Since you will likely feel drowsy for the rest of the day, we advise that you rest and stay hydrated. In some cases, patients may become nauseous or undergo temporary memory loss. However, these side effects will typically diminish within 24 hours. If you notice any abnormalities or if your symptoms persist, please contact our facility right away.
IV Sedation Insurance Coverage
Intravenous sedation may or may not be covered by your dental insurance provider. Before receiving sedation, our financial staff will contact your insurer to determine coverage amounts and any additional out-of-pocket expenses. Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons takes a range of payment options and can provide information on medical financing through CareCredit® to make therapy more affordable for most of our patients.
Undergoing the treatment you need for better health and wellness should be a positive, pleasant experience.
