Overview
The wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to emerge into the mouth and generally erupt in the late teen – early adult years. Located in the back ends of both arches, wisdom teeth (or third molars) often lack sufficient room to fully erupt, can be difficult to keep clean, and frequently require removal to safeguard a patient's overall oral wellness. These teeth can be impacted (trapped in the gum tissues or jaw), misaligned, or simply unable to grow in properly, leading to a range of oral issues. At Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, our board-certified specialists commonly perform wisdom tooth removal for Albany, NY patients to help restore dental wellness and prevent further oral health concerns. If you or a member of your family has problematic or impacted wisdom teeth, schedule an appointment with Drs. Stephen DeMarco, Diego Miron, or Luis Delgado to learn if wisdom tooth removal is a treatment option.
Best Candidates
Often, wisdom teeth begin the eruption process between the ages of 17 – 21, which is the ideal time to have them removed, if necessary. While not all patients will require wisdom teeth extractions, leaving problematic wisdom teeth in the mouth might carry negative effects for other teeth, a patient's general comfort, and overall oral health. Patients are often referred by their general dentist to Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons to remove wisdom teeth affected by:
- Full or partial tooth impaction
- Inadequate space for proper eruption
- Tooth decay or gum disease
- Periodontal inflammation (pericoronitis)
- Tightly spaced teeth or overcrowding
- Malpositioning (tilted or rotated)
- Abscesses, cysts, or tumors
What to Expect
Our Albany, NY oral surgeons perform third molar extractions under local anesthesia. However, this procedure may also be paired with sedation dentistry techniques to improve patient comfort. Many cases of wisdom tooth removal require a surgical approach, most notably when the teeth are impacted, have misshapen roots, or are solidly anchored within the bone tissue. Once our skilled surgeons create an opening in the gums to access the wisdom tooth, they will gently remove the tooth from the jaw. This may require sectioning the tooth into smaller parts, which allows for a more efficient extraction while preserving surrounding oral structures. Depending on your unique needs, all four wisdom teeth might be taken out in one visit. Sutures may be placed to close and protect the treatment sites as the mouth heals. Our clinical team will provide post-treatment instructions to follow over the next few days.

Recovery
Patients who require additional forms of sedation to stay comfortable during their visit will have to be driven home by an adult family member or friend. During the initial few days following wisdom tooth extraction, it is important to avoid spitting, sipping using a straw, consuming hot or cold meals and liquids, and completely cease smoking and vaping. These behaviors can displace the clot that forms in the extraction site and lead to a condition known as "dry socket." It is not abnormal to have facial swelling and aching after wisdom tooth removal, which could be reduced with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication and cool compresses applied to the face. Our team will arrange a follow-up visit at our oral surgery practice in Albany, NY to monitor the treatment areas as they recover.
Other Types of Extractions
In some instances, teeth other than wisdom teeth have to be taken out to enhance dental wellness. Such instances generally involve severe tooth decay, broken teeth, advanced jawbone loss, or teeth that just cannot be repaired. Children could require extractions to remove retained primary (baby) teeth or to facilitate treatment. While our oral surgeons strive to help patients keep their natural teeth, the best approach for some oral conditions could be tooth removal.
Insurance Coverage
A number of dental insurance plans offer some coverage toward wisdom tooth extraction procedures. IV sedation or anesthesia services, however, may not be included. Our financial team will review insurance benefits before estimating any additional out-of-pocket expenses. To make extractions as convenient as possible for our patients, Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons takes several forms of payments and accepts CareCredit® financing plans.
