While our team of experienced oral surgeons makes every attempt to preserve and save your natural teeth, there are instances where a tooth or teeth may need to be taken out. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible above the gums. This is normally used for a tooth that is decayed or damaged and cannot be repaired. A surgical extraction takes out a tooth that has not erupted above the gums or those that must be sectioned and removed in pieces. Surgical extractions are most commonly performed for impacted teeth, like the wisdom teeth, that lack adequate space to erupt properly into your mouth. No matter the reason for having an extraction at Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, our team uses advanced skill and technology to optimize your care, safety, and treatment results. Our oral surgeons are also certified in all types of dental anesthesia and sedation dentistry, which can allow you to remain comfortable and relaxed during your treatment. Contact our Albany, NY team for more information on tooth extractions or to schedule an exam with Drs. Stephen DeMarco, Diego Miron, Timothy Adams, or Luis Delgado.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
One of our most common surgical procedures is wisdom teeth extraction. The wisdom teeth, or the third molars, are located in the back of the mouth and often lack the space needed to erupt safely into the mouth. These teeth are often impacted (trapped in the bone and gum), tilted, turned, or otherwise malpositioned and can bring negative impacts to oral health. Some of these impacts include damage to surrounding teeth, gum disease, and tooth decay. When they do erupt, they may be difficult to clean and maintain, which places them at a higher risk for oral diseases, like tooth decay. Wisdom teeth often begin the eruption process in patients between the ages of 17 - 21, which is the prime time to have them removed, if necessary. If you or your family member needs wisdom teeth removal, rest assured that your comfort and care will be our highest priority.
Tooth Extractions Reviews
"After having issues with Adirondack Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons (read my other review for them) I was happy that I called Capital District OMS. The office is very well organized and efficient - being able to fill out the patient information sheet online saved a lot of time in the office. We were able to consult with the doctor and got all of our questions answered prior to scheduling my son's wisdom teeth extraction. Plus, the estimate is 1/2 what the other place was going to charge. Everyone we met today was very friendly and nice. Looking forward to the procedure which was scheduled at a very convenient time for us."- N.L. / Yelp / Jan 30, 2017
"When my dentist first informed me I would need a tooth extraction I had anxiety so bad I had to be put on ant-anxiety medication. I went to the oral surgeon I was referred to. They were rude, cold and could care less that i was falling apart over this situation. I had to find another surgeon. Months of pain, fear and life altering anxiety went by. Then I found this place. Once I had the courage to make the call they were immediately kind and helpful. I had that tooth extracted today and I can tell you it was quick and painless. The degree of compassion and professionalism I found here subdued my fears. I was in and out so fast and painless I didn't even think it had happened. If you have any fear or question in your mind DON'T! These people can help you. I know this because they helped me and until this morning I truly believed I was unhelpable. Thank you to everyone in this wonderful office."- S.H. / Google / Nov 06, 2017

- Malpositioned wisdom teeth
- Tooth impactions

What To Expect
Extractions are routinely performed in one of our state-of-the-art surgical suites under a combination of local anesthesia and sedation dentistry services. When you visit with our team for your treatment consultation, we can discuss the sedation methods available and help you choose the method right for your needs. In a simple extraction, our skilled oral surgeons will loosen up the tooth with a special device known as an elevator and then gently remove it from the socket. A surgical extraction involves making incisions into your gums to allow our team better access to the tooth. If needed, the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces to minimize the impact on your jaw during the removal process. Once the tooth has been extracted, the gum tissues within the extraction site may be sutured and post-op instructions will be provided to you or your escort.
Based upon the sedation used throughout your extraction, you might be required to have an adult escort you home. While your gums heal, you need to avoid smoking, spitting, and using straws. Your recovery process will depend on the complexity of your tooth extraction; however, we advise that you stick to soft, room-temperature food for at least a few days after the procedure and avoid extremely hot or cold foods or beverages. To help facilitate your healing phase, it is important that you follow the specific instructions given to you by our team on what to expect as you recover and how to care for your mouth as you heal. Your mouth may be swollen and tender after the extraction, which can often be managed with cold compresses against the face and over-the-counter pain relievers. In some cases, a prescription for pain medication may be provided by our oral surgery team. A follow-up visit may be scheduled for suture removal and to allow our oral surgeons to evaluate your healing progress.
An extraction may be covered, at least in part, by dental insurance, but your sedation option may not be a covered service. Prior to your procedure, we will call your insurance carrier to ascertain your specific policy and estimate your costs. If you do not carry insurance or have personal expenses, talk with our business team about payment options to help your care fit within your budget. Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons accepts several payment methods, including flexible plans through a third-party financing partner.
