What To Expect

Adult and pediatric tooth extractions are routinely performed in one of our state-of-the-art surgical suites under a combination of local anesthesia and sedation dentistry services. When you visit with our Albany, NY oral surgery team for your treatment consultation, we can discuss the sedation options available and help you choose the method right for your family's needs. Tooth extractions for kids and adults may be performed with a simple or surgical approach. In a simple extraction, our oral surgeons will loosen the tooth with a special device known as an elevator and then gently remove it from the socket. A surgical extraction involves making incisions into your gums to provide access to the tooth, such as when teeth are impacted. A tooth may also be sectioned into smaller pieces to minimize the impact on surrounding tissues. Once the tooth has been extracted, the gum tissues within the extraction site may be sutured and aftercare instructions will be provided by our team.

Recovery

Based upon the sedation used throughout the extraction, you or your family member might be required to have an adult escort you home. While your gums heal, it is important to avoid smoking, spitting, and using straws. The recovery process will depend on the complexity of the tooth extraction; however, we advise that you or your child eat soft, room-temperature food for at least a few days after the procedure and avoid extremely hot or cold foods or beverages. To help facilitate the recovery phase, it is important to follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by our team. Post-treatment symptoms, such as swelling and tenderness, can often be managed with cold compresses against the face and over-the-counter pain relievers. A follow-up visit may be scheduled at Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons for suture removal and to allow our oral surgeons to evaluate your healing progress.

Insurance Coverage

Tooth extractions for children and adults may be covered in part by dental insurance; however, sedation dentistry may not be a covered service. Prior to the procedure, we will call your insurance carrier to review your family's specific policy and estimate any personal costs. If you do not carry insurance or have out-of-pocket expenses, talk with our business team about payment options to help your care fit within your budget. Capital District Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons accepts several payment methods, including flexible plans through a third-party financing partner.
